The consequences of alcoholism are not only dangerous, but also fatal. For instance, abusive drinking can increase the risk for certain cancers, such as cancer of the throat, esophagus, colon, larynx, rectum, kidneys, and liver. Excessive drinking can also lead to immune system problems, harm to the fetus while the mother is pregnant, cirrhosis of the liver, chronic alcoholism, and brain damage. Furthermore, heavy drinking increases the risk of recreational and work-related injuries and accidents. Finally, homicides and suicides are more likely to be committed by individuals who have been drinking alcohol. Unfortunately, it appears that that many people are unaware of this type of "alcohol awareness."
